| I nodded and steadied my hand. It worked! The wrap shrunk neatly around
the basket, and I, in my first attempt at shrink-wrapping, had not made a hole. By now, I was so elated and excited. I was jabbering to the people around me. A crowd gathered as I told them about Tom's miracle gun. "Look no holes," I said. Some people looked on duplicating my enthusiasm., some just smiled benignly and moved on. There was no stopping me now. I bought a gun right on the spot. And what's more... Tom said I could take it with me right then and there. "Really, Tom?" I asked. "I can take one right now?" He handed me a small cardboard box. "Is it in there?" "Of course," he answered in his firm Clark Gable way. Such a nice man, I thought. I strode away, my new gun placed firmly under my arm. I was pleased. I was going to practice shrink-wrapping in my room. A short while later, it dawned on me that I had no shrink-wrap materials. I returned to Tom, this time with much more bravado because Tom and I were now old friends. "Will you sell me the end of that shrink-wrap roll you're using, Tom?" |
He pondered a moment and then said, "Well okay... but you'll have to
pick it up at the end of the show." "Thanks, Tom." During the rest of the show, I strolled by to see if my roll of shrink-wrap was still there. Others tried to buy the roll, too, but Tom proved to be faithful and turned them away. And, finally it was mine. The coveted roll of shrink-wrap was really mine. A few days later, I was back in Canada in my own workshop ready to try out my new toys. Oddly, I had gotten a big basket order which needed my attention, and it needed to be shrink-wrapped. I had brought my husband with me. Between the two of us, we made small bags, medium bags, large bags, and giant bags. We even made a double-wide, double-tall bag. It took a while because we didn't have a crimper -- that's a couple of months in my future. But, we used a small balloon heat sealer, and it may have been slow and tedious, but... it worked!! My virgin days are now far behind me. Here it is spring, and I am looking forward to another JUBILEE! convention, but this time, I will attend as a shrink-wrap... PRO! Thanks, Tom!! END |
